Famously, this is the game that went on to become Super Mario Bros. 2 when released in the United States in place of Super Mario Bros.: The Lost Levels.
The game was created as part of a Fuji TV promotion for their Dream Factory event where they showcased their latest shows and Fuji products. The main characters you play as, Imajin, Lina, Mama and Papa, were mascots for the Dream Factory event.
Two children are dragged into a magical storybook by Mamu the frog. The heroes head into the storybook world to rescue them.
All of the characters have different jumping and carrying abilities. They can pluck Vegetables from the ground as weapons, or pick up enemies and throw them at other enemies.
Despite the similarities to Super Mario Bros. 2, there are a number of changes. The aim is to get all four characters through the entire game and face Mamu in order to complete the game, and you can only switch characters when one receives a Game Over. The characters are unable to run, and several boss battles have changed. There are also some music and item differences between the two.
Oddly, the Starman and POW Block (both objects from the Mario series) still appear in this game.
