Family BASIC

A hardware and software bundle that included the Famicom Keyboard and Famicom Data Recorder, and a cartridge that could be used for programming in the customised BASIC language, NS-HUBASIC (Nintendo/Sharp Hudson-BASIC). It also came with a large manual on how to get started with using the utility.

Versions

Several versions of the game were released, adding functionality and bug fixes:

  • Family BASIC

    The original release.

  • Family BASIC V2

    Added SCR$ functionality.

  • Family BASIC V3

    A complete overhaul, featuring more built-in games and a simplified user-interface.

Cameos

BG GRAPHIC: Mario Bros. & Donkey Kong sprites

Enter BG GRAPHIC mode and scroll through the sprites you can use. Some of them are from Nintendo's arcade games.

There are ladders and girders from Donkey Kong, vines, branches and grassy islands from Donkey Kong Jr. and a range of platforms from Mario Bros.

GAME 0: Mario & Pauline

In Family BASIC V3, enter "GAME 0" to play the first game.

Simply hold down a button or make a noise into the Famicom controller microphone to make a large pink heart appear.

When the heart is drawn, Mario and Pauline from Donkey Kong will run in at the bottom of the screen.

GAME 1: Pinball Penguin & Sidesteppers

In Family BASIC V3, enter "GAME 1" to play the second game.

You control the penguin from Pinball. Walk along the blue lines, and collect the numbers in the right order while avoiding the Sidesteppers from Mario Bros.

GAME 2: Mario Adventure

In Family BASIC V3, enter "GAME 2" to play the third game.

You control Mario, avoiding the grimacing bomb-like enemies. You have to design your own level first or Mario will simply fall off the screen (as in the screenshot).

GAME 3: Star Killer Enemies

In Family BASIC V3, enter "GAME 3" to play the fourth game, entitled "Star Killer".

In this 2-Player game, you fly spaceships around a screen shooting at enemies.

Several of the enemies are from other games, including Fighter Fly from Mario Bros., and Fireballs from Donkey Kong.
