Information

Since the last Banjo-Kazooie game, little seems to have changed. Banjo is still a bear in yellow shorts, and Kazooie is the foul mouthed bird who lives in his backpack. One thing that has changed is Gruntilda. Being buried under a rock hasn't done her much good, and when her two witch sisters arrive and dig her up, she is little more than a skeleton (albeit one that then blows up Banjo's house with Bottles inside). The coven of witches set out to absorb all life in the land to get Grunty her body back. It's another job for Banjo and Kazooie, who set off after the trio of hags to bring an end to their scheme.

The structure of the game is similar to that of the previous installment. You gain access to stages through an expansive hub world. In each stage you have to collect the golden Jiggies by carrying out a huge variety of tasks. These tasks can be just about anything, from climbing to the top of a stage, beating a boss character, or solving intricate puzzles using all of the moves on offer. Sometimes just navigating a stage is a puzzle in itself, requiring you to find new attacks or transform courtesy of Humba Wumba.

Mumbo Jumbo, who dealt with your transformations in the previous installment, can now join Banjo and Kazooie on their quest. On each stage you must pay him one Glowbo and you will control him for a while. His power is unique on each stage, and always necessary to retrieve some of the Jiggies.

Loggo: I'm all blocked up… Help!

Kazooie: Then call a plumber. I think Mario's free at the moment.

Loggo: I don't think he actually does that kind of work anymore…

Sabreman

On the Hailfire Peaks stage there is a major cameo appearance from one of the first Rare characters, Sabreman, hero of four of Rare's ZX Spectrum games from 1984: Sabre Wulf, Underwurlde, Knight Lore and Pentagram.

Sabreman

Finding Sabreman

When you reach Hailfire Peaks, transform into Mumbo Jumbo and head into the ice section. On the frozen shore you find an explorer trapped in ice. Use Mumbo's magic to free him and after he thaws he introduces himself as Sabreman. He says he was led to the frozen side of Hailfire Peaks by the Sabre Wulf in 1984, and he's been frozen ever since.

Warm him up and have Banjo carry him back to the tent on the fiery side of Hailfire Peaks. His tent has the Sabre Wulf logo on the side.

Note

The final Sabreman game on the ZX Spectrum, Pentagram, was actually released in 1986.

Dolphin

Dolphin Reference

After rewarding you with a Jiggy, Sabreman falls asleep. If you talk to him, he says he might take a ride on a dolphin - a reference to the working title of the GameCube.

Mr. Pants

On Rare's website, the webmaster needed a character to appear on the questionnaire page. Unable to get hold of a render, Leigh Loveday (the website maintainer) created Mr. Pants - a stickman wearing a pair of red underpants and a bowler hat. He became so well known through the website that he started making cameos, including two in this game.

Ordnance Storage

In Glitter Gulch Mine you meet Bullion Bill who tells you 15 sticks of dynamite are running loose in Ordnance Storage. When you go down to sort them out, the view changes to a first-person perspective and Banjo holds Kazooie like a gun.

The map for the Ordnance Storage area is laid out almost identically to the Goldeneye 007 multiplayer map, Complex.
