You play as a boy called Hero, who receives a letter informing him of his father's death. As one of his father's wishes, Hero sets out to become a Robo Commander. He joins a group of bounty hunters called the Steel Hearts, where he meets Ernest, Harry and Marcia, who teach him the basics and help him get his Custom Robo license.
They discover the original inspiration for Custom Robo battling, a toy possessed by a spiritual being known as Rahu, who once attacked the world. Custom Robo battling was set up as a way to fight Rahu, leading the being to remain dormant for years. He returns and intends to put his evil plans back into action.
The game continues the same battle mechanics as the Nintendo 64 games. You customise your Robo by selecting from 5 part categories: the chassis, gun, bomb, pod and legs.
Battles take part in Holosseums. Your Robo is launched into the arena through a Robocannon. You have to reduce your opponents HP from 1000 down to 0 by hitting it with your Robo's weaponry. You can win more Robo parts by winning battles, allowing you to challenge stronger opponents.
Custom Robo on GameCube is the fourth game in the series, but the first to be released in the United States.
The working title for the GameCube was the "Dolphin", and many N64 and GameCube games made reference to this.
One of the upgrades you can acquire in this game is called the Dolphin Pod: A pair of shoulder-mounted pod launchers shaped like dolphins. You can also get Dolphin Pod upgrades – the "Dolphin G" and the "Orca".
During the game you find out about a group called the "Z-Syndicate". In the park area, a number of NPC try to guess what the "Z" could stand for. One suggests "Zelda" (the title character of The Legend of Zelda series) and another suggests "Zebes" (the planet that provides the setting for Metroid and Super Metroid).
