Information

Donkey Kong is on the top screen at the top of the construction site throwing barrels. Mario starts on the bottom screen, where he has to move left, right, climb ladders and jump in order to dodge the barrels. When Mario reaches the top screen, flip the crane switch, move to the right dodging more barrels, then jump and grab the swinging crane hook and Mario will cut a girder wire. When all four girder wires have been cut, Donkey Kong falls.

You score 1 point for each barrel you jump over on the lower screen and 2 points on the top screen. You score between 5 and 20 points for cutting a girder wire based on how long it took to reach. When all four girder wires have been cut, you score 20 points. If you spend too much time reaching the crane, the barrels speed up until they are too fast to jump over.

If Mario is hit by a barrel, hits his head on a moving girder, or jumps and misses the crane hook then a miss is counted and Mario returns to the bottom of the construction site. If you miss three times then the game ends. When you reach 300 points, one miss is cleared. If you have no misses when you reach 300 then Chance Time begins, and all points are awarded double until a miss is counted.

Game Modes

Game A and Game B play the same, but Game B is faster and more difficult.

D-Pad

Donkey Kong was the first videogame to use a + shaped control pad, which was later used on the Family Computer and Nintendo Entertainment System. It has since gone on to become the standard digital input for video games.
