The F-Zero tournament is the fastest and most dangerous sport in the galaxy. F-Zero machines are souped up for insane speeds, and only the most agile-minded racers have a chance to win, or even to survive. Now with all new circuits and even higher speeds than before, it's open to anyone to take home the trophy.
In F-Zero GX you have to race laps around various circuits, placing first. The craft are fast and responsive, requiring you to concentrate on the track up ahead, if not actually memorize it in advance. You need to keep your eye on the energy meter as well. If you take damage or use your boost after the first lap then it depletes. If the meter empties then a single knock will destroy your racer. You can also destroy other racers by spin-attacking or knocking them from the stage.
Playing the various game modes gives you credit to spend in the shops and garages. Here you can buy new racers, or build yourself a machine from the ground up - even designing the emblems to put on it. You can also use your memory card in a copy of F-Zero AX in the Arcade, allowing you to unlock new characters and stages.
On the first Port Town stage, Aero Dive, giant robots can be seen unloading cargo in the background.
The robots are based on R.O.B., the NES accessory. It appears in red and white, the colours of the Japanese Famicom Robot.
Mr. E.A.D. is named after Nintendo designer Shigeru Miyamoto's development studio, Entertainment Analysis & Development. The character bears a resemblance to Mario, with a bushy moustache and a Starman on his belt. This character first appeared in F-Zero X.
The entry for Mr. E.A.D.'s Great Star F-Zero Racer states:
"This machine was designed by Shiggs Mapone, rumored to be the head of a mysterious underground development group known as EAD."
The name "Shiggs Mapone" is a reference to Shigeru Miyamoto.
James McCloud is inspired by the Star Fox series. He is a human wearing full Star Fox uniform, and he shares his name with Fox McCloud's father. His racer, Little Wyvern, is based on the Arwing fighter craft. His bio says he is leader of the "Galaxy Dogs". This character also first appeared in F-Zero X.
Captain Falcon's Alter-Ego
When playing the Story Mode chapter "High Stakes at Mute City", Captain Falcon adopts a false identity to enter a tournament - the mysterious "Famicom". This was the name of the NES console in Japan.
Billy's Super Monkey Ball Belt
The racer Billy is wearing a belt with a face imprinted on it. In the official artwork, you can make out that the face is of Aiai, hero of Sega's Super Monkey Ball. Both Super Monkey Ball and F-Zero GX were developed by Sega's Amusement Vision studio.
