The duelling races of the Tellius continent have finally found a wary peace after centuries of blood being spilled. But even now, a new evil is threatening to tear the fragile peace, causing war to rise once again. Ike and his band of warriors must delve into Tellius to uncover this evil.
Despite being the first 3D Fire Emblem game, the set up is very similar to that of previous iterations. The map is divided into a grid, within which your characters move a set number of spaces each turn. In a move a character can visit buildings, use items, or attack an enemy. The battles with enemies are stat based, and are not played out by you. Certain kinds of weapons or magic will give you the edge (or make you weak against) certain enemies. Should the leader of your team be defeated in battle then your game will end, but if any other character is defeated then you can continue, but the character remains defeated forever.
Each map provides you with a scenario you must clear. This is usually to clear the enemies from the map, but it can also include protecting a character or your army for a set number of turns, create a distraction while your troops remove the head of the enemy team, and more.
Several of the songs in the game's soundtrack are remixes of earlier Fire Emblem themes:
