You play action hero James Bond, secret agent for the British government. When a plan to take out a USSR chemical weapon factory goes awry, James Bond escapes leaving Alec Trevelyan, agent 006, to die. In the years that follow, a Russian general named Ouromov steals the Goldeneye satellite. James Bond is sent into a post-communist Russia to find out what the satellite is being used for, and who is behind the Janus Syndicate.
The game takes place over a number of missions. You are given a set of tasks that must be completed in order to accomplish each mission, and the number of tasks increases on higher difficulty levels. Along the way you will also have to collect weapons and items to assist you. The usual stash of guns can be used to mow down the hoards of enemy soldiers you will face, but you will have to avoid shooting civilians or scientists. Other items can be used to open locks or activate certain computer systems, and others can be set as traps.
By far the most popular aspect of the game is its multiplayer deathmatch mode. Up to four players can face off in a choice of arenas. Collect guns and body armour, and rack up more kills than everyone else before the time runs out. There are also many variations on multiplayer mode that can be activated by playing with the huge list of options.
One of the first cheat modes you unlock is DK Mode. When activated, all characters grow large heads and long arms like a gorilla. The cheat is named after Donkey Kong.
Soldiers
The majority of the enemy forces in the game have the faces of Rare employees. Their faces were photographed and mapped onto the 3D models.
Dr. Doak
In the Facility stage, you have to meet a scientist double-agent named Dr. Doak. He is based on the Rare staff member David Doak.
He also appears as a secret multiplayer character under the name of "Dave".
KLOBB
One of the guns, the KLOBB, is named after Nintendo employee Ken Lobb.
