Kyle Hyde, an ex-police officer, has been searching for his former partner, Brian Bradley after he disappeared without a trace. Now working for a sales company in Los Angeles, Kyle has checked in to Hotel Dusk after collecting a package for his boss. While there he begins to discover that the hotel may also hold answers to the mystery that has dogged him for years.
To play the game, the DS must be turned on its side like a book. The touch screen is used to move Kyle around the hotel, search the surroundings, and select dialogue during conversations with the staff and patrons of Hotel Dusk. The top screen shows characters and more detailed information. You can pick up items and either show them to other characters or use them to solve puzzles.
The hospital that Mila stayed in is named Robbins Hospital. This is a reference to Ashley Robbins, the heroine of Cing's first DS adventure game Trace Memory.
Rosa, the hotel's maid, mentions that her husband is a sailor. When you find a photo of him later, he turns out to be the Captain you meet at the beginning of Trace Memory.
