Kid Icarus
…aka. Light Myth: Palutena's Mirror (Japan)
In the distant past, in an age when Gods and Man lived together in harmony, there was a peaceful kingdom called Angel Land, ruled by two beautiful goddesses. The goddess Palutena lived in the Sky Palace and ruled with light so that man could grow food and live happily. Medusa ruled the darkness and hated mankind, drying up crops and turning people into stone statues. Palutena grew angry, and transformed Medusa into an ugly monster and banished her to the Underworld. In revenge, Medusa joined forces with the evil monsters of the Underworld and waged war against the Sky Palace.
In the final battle, Palutena's army was defeated and transformed into stone statues and Medusa stole the Three Sacred Treasures: the Mirror Shield, Light Arrow and Pegasus Wing. Palutena was sealed in a chamber in the Sky Palace. Using the last of her magic, she contacted the head of her personal bodyguards, the valiant angel warrior Pit.
Armed with a bow and arrow, Pit managed to escape into the Underworld. Now Pit must find the three Sacred Treasures and defeat Medusa if he is to rescue Palutena and save all of Angel Land.
You play as Pit, the angel warrior. Pit can move left and right, jump and use his Bow & Arrow to shoot in three directions. He has a stamina bar that depletes as he takes damage from enemies.
The game is composed of four worlds: the Underworld, Overworld, Sky World and the Sky Palace. The first three worlds are divided into three stages and a dungeon. The Underworld and Sky Worlds feature vertically-scrolling stages where falling off the bottom of the stage gives an instant Game Over and you must restart from the beginning of that stage. The Overworld features side-scrolling stages, and you cannot return in the direction you came from. The dungeons at the end of each world are large mazes made of connecting rooms, and in them you have to find and defeat a boss character to reclaim one of the Sacred Treasures. Once you have all three Sacred Treasures, the Sky Palace is a single side-scrolling stage where pit can fly and shoot, turning it into a shooting game.
If you manage to get a high score then your stamina bar will be increased and your Bow & Arrow will be made stronger when you next clear a stage. You can also find the god Zeus behind certain doors. If you manage to survive his training, he grants you power-ups and special weapons.
When Pit defeats an enemy it will leave either a small heart, half-heart or large heart behind. Collecting these hearts will allow you to buy from the shopkeepers and black marketeers you will find behind certain doors. Other doors may contain rooms full of enemies, mini-games or life springs where you can refill your health.
Throughout the game you will also find Harps that transform all of the enemies into Hammers for a short period of time. Collect as many Hammers as you can, as they can be used to free Palutena's Soldiers in the Dungeon stages. When you reach the boss of the dungeon, all of the soldiers you rescued in that stage will fly into the battle and attack the boss for you. They lack strength and will be defeated in a single hit, but there is strength in numbers, and they can deal a lot of extra damage to a boss.
In the dungeons you can be transformed into an Eggplant by the Eggplant Wizard. In this form, you are unable to use your Bow & Arrow, and must seek the assistance of a nurse on the map to transform back into Pit.
The game has several different endings based on how many arrows you accumulated on your status screen through training with Zeus.
Differences between Disk System and NES versions
The Famicom Disk System featured an extra sound channel that was not available on the Famicom or NES, so several songs have extra instruments and enemies make different sound effects than they do in the cartridge version. The songs with extra instruments are: the title screen, the ending and the Game Over screen.
Also changed is the saving system. On the Famicom Disk System, the game could be saved much like The Legend of Zelda. Outside of Japan, the game featured a password system that would have to be entered each time you started the game.
One of the flying type enemies that appears in the Sky World is Komayto, a seethrough creature with protruding teeth and three internal nuclei. Its design is based on the Metroids from the Metroid series, with the first Metroid game released only 4 months earlier.
The name has been localised from the Japanese "Kometo", which would more accurately translate as "Child Met".
