A gang of thieves called the Squeak Squad have been plaguing Dream Land. When one of them unwittingly steals Kirby's shortcake, they soon find themselves being pursued across the land by the famous pink puffball.

Kirby brings some new skills to the fore in this adventure. When Kirby eats an enemy the power is stored in his stomach (displayed on the touch screen). You can select what power Kirby should have, as well as combine powers by dragging them together - giving Kirby unique abilities that will help access secret areas. Several powers also affect the environment this time as well, such as burning grass and freezing water.

A new set of Kirby themed minigames are also available, and can be played locally over a wireless connection with up to four players.

The miniboss Shadow Hand is a fuzzy, black hand based on the Master Hand from Kirby & The Amazing Mirror, who in turn was based on Master Hand from the Super Smash Bros. series.
