Information

In the ancient kingdom of Hyrule, a terrible fiend known as Ganon appeared. The people hoped the Legendary Hero would appear, but he didn't. To prevent all Hyrule from falling, the king used the power of the Triforce to cover the world in a Great Sea.

Many generations have passed, and on Outset Island, a young boy named Link prepares for his tenth birthday by dressing in the Hero's Tunic to commemorate the Legendary Hero. But a giant Helmaroc carrying a girl appeared over the island, dropping her into the forest when hit by a chasing pirate ship. Link rescues the girl, who turns out to be Tetra, the captain of the pirates. The Helmaroc appears again, kidnapping Link's sister, Aryll. Link joins the pirates on a chase across the Great Sea.

The Helmaroc is kidnapping maidens for Ganondorf in search of Princess Zelda. In order to rescue his sister, Link must become stronger. He teams up with a talking boat that calls itself the King of Red Lions and sets off on an adventure that will decide the future of the Great Sea and the ancient kingdom of Hyrule.

Link's attacks are mostly the same as in the N64 titles, with a new counter-attack that requires you to time pressing the A Button when it flashes on the screen. There are also all-new weapons such as the Deku Leaf that lets Link glide across gaps, and the Grappling Hook that allows Link to swing from poles and pull up treasure from the sea.

The overworld is covered in the Great Sea, and you travel in The King of Red Lions to the many islands across its surface. The boat also gives you the Wind Waker that allows you to conduct the direction of the winds. You can collect your sea chart by feeding the fish that appear in each area.

Cameos

Carlov's Collection

Carlov's collection

On one of the islands near Forest Haven you will find the Nintendo Gallery where Carlov the sculptor transforms photographs into figurines.

Behind Carlov's desk you can see a collection of items from previous Zelda games, Ocarina of Time and Majora's Mask:

  • A Lon Lon Milk poster, and several empty milk bottles.
  • Bunny Hood
  • All-Night Mask
  • Goron Mask
  • Keaton Mask

If Carlov makes a figurine of himself, his description reads:

Lately, his club has been losing membership because he hasn't done anything "cool" with it, but as long as Link hangs around, everything will be all right!

Some suggest this is a parody of Nintendo's situation, as they were losing their share of the gaming market to "cool" competitors.

Manny's Satchel

Manny's Satchel

Also hanging around the Nintendo Gallery is a fan named Manny. The design on his satchel is an 8-bit Octorok sprite from The Legend of Zelda.

Octorok

After you get the Octorok figurine in the Nintendo Gallery, its description states:

"Winner of the Perfect Attendance Award"

This is in reference to the Octorok being in every Legend of Zelda game (at least up until the release of The Wind Waker).

Stained Glass Windows

In the chamber of the lost Hyrule Castle where you find the Master Sword, there are seven stained glass windows around the edge of the room, each depicting the seven sages from The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time.

Tingle Tuner

Screenshot Required

The Tingle Tuner is shaped like a Game Boy Advance.

If you use the Tingle Tuner on Outset Island, Knuckle will walk you through a scavenger hunt minigame. Clear all four stages and he lets you use his Hand-Me-Down Tingle Tuner as a submenu for the regular Tingle Tuner. The Hand-Me-Down Tingle Tuner is a light blue Game Boy Color.

Pearl Statues

The three statues that unlock the Tower of the Gods each have a defining characteristic:

  • The red pearl statue has a nose
  • The blue pearl statue has a mouth
  • The yellow pearl statue has ears

In the Pikmin series, the red, blue and yellow Pikmin each have the same defining characteristics.

Dolphin

Screenshot Required

The working title for the GameCube was the Dolphin, and a number of Nintendo games make reference to this name.

In The Wind Waker, the old man on Outset Island who teaches you how to use your sword is named Orca. Orca, more commonly known as the Killer Whale, is the largest member of the dolphin family.

Hylian Writing

Each character in the Hylian alphabet represents a letter in Japanese, and so it is possible to translate the Hylian text that appears throughout the game.

Phantom Ganon's Sword

The Hylian writing on the Phantom Ganon enemy's sword reads "Zubora Gabora". Zubora and Gabora were the names of two blacksmiths that lived on Snowpeak in The Legend of Zelda: Majora's Mask.

Windfall Café

The board written in Hylian at the Windfall Island Café is a Specials board which reads:

- Today's Specials -
Lon Lon Milk - 150
Deku Nut Cake - 300
Zora Coffee - 150

Lon Lon Milk and Deku Nuts both featured in The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time and Majora's Mask.
