Zero Mission is a retelling of the original Metroid story. Rather than a straight remake, it uses the original title as inspiration for an entirely new game featuring all-new areas, more story development and gameplay from the later games in the series. There is more information on Samus's childhood living on Zebes with the Chozo people.
The basic structure of the game is the same. Find and defeat Kraid and Ridley in order to unlock the way to Tourian where you can destroy Mother Brain and the Metroids.
Samus's basic abilities have been vastly upgraded, with the ability to shoot diagonally and cling to ledges. Many weapons from later games have also been added, as has the ability to equip both the Ice Beam and Wave Beam at the same time. You can also access new regions of the map, including Crateria and Chozodia on the planet's surface.
When you defeat the Mother Brain, an extra chapter opens. As she escapes the planet, Samus is caught in a gunfight with two Space Pirate ships. One crashes, but the second shoots Samus down. Stranded on the planet's surface with no Power Suit and no ship, she must sneak through the planet with a weak stun gun that has to recharge after each use. Using stealth, you must guide her to the Chozo Ruins where she can equip a new Power Suit and destroy the crashed Space Pirate ship.
Link your copy of Metroid Zero Mission to another Game Boy Advance with Metroid Fusion. This will unlock all of the ending art from Metroid Fusion in Zero Mission's Fusion Gallery.
After completing the game, the original NES Metroid will become available to play in the Options menu.
