You take control of a secret agent, Joanna Dark, who is sent on a standard mission that turns into a massive sci-fi story. Based on the Goldeneye engine, you view the world through Joanna's eyes, dispatching enemies with the weapons at your disposal.
Following on from her first mission, Joanna discovers and gets involved in, the search for an alien weapon that could destroy whole planets. The weapon was buried at the bottom of Earth's oceans by a peaceful alien race, never expecting it to be found. However, another alien race has discovered the whereabouts and has commission the corrupt DataDyne corporation to lift the weapon from the sea and hand it on to them. An alien war has broken out, and only with Joanna Dark's help can peace be restored to the galaxy.
Perfect Dark requires you to enter stages and complete mission objectives to win. There are three difficulty modes, each one with smarter enemies and more objectives than the last. As you complete objectives you move on to the next stage in the story. Objectives could be anything, from collecting items, setting off an explosion, not killing civilians, and so on. Along the way you will have to collect weapons and dispatch enemies, but you often have to be stealthy, not drawing attention to yourself.
The game comes with a range of multiplayer options. Two players can work with or against each other in the one-player missions, or up to four players can take part in a fully customisable deathmatch, where the winner is the last one standing.
Originally seen in Goldeneye 007, DK Mode is a cheat mode that makes all the characters' heads and arms huge, like a gorilla. The name of the cheat is a reference to Donkey Kong.
Perfect Dark features many references to its spiritual predecessor Goldeneye 007.
BAFTA Award
In one of the safes in the game, you can find a BAFTA Award, which Rare won for Goldeneye 007.
Goldeneye Weapons
In the Carrington Institute, you can see a display case containing weapons from Goldeneye 007. You can unlock these weapons later in the game, although they have all been given different (but similar) names.
The KLOBB gun, named after Nintendo employee Ken Lobb, is now named the KLO1313.
Multiplayer Maps
Three of the multiplayer maps are copies of maps from Goldeneye 007.
The faces of the enemy soldiers in the game are all staff from Rare and Nintendo.
Nintendo game designer Shigeru Miyamoto appears as one of the patrolling guards during the opening for the Pelagic II stage. He is dressed in red overalls with a white shirt, similar to Fire Mario.
