The Pilotwings flight academy is looking for new recruits. Pick one of the bizarrely proportioned characters and help them earn their Pilotwings license by mastering each of the flying missions on offer.
The aim of the game is to jump into a hanglider, rocket belt or gyrocopter and score as high as you can. Scoring depends on the mission, but usually include time/fuel limits, and the accuracy of your landing, but other elements will alter your score as well. If you achieve a certain score over a number of missions then you will get your license and can move up the ranks. Depending on your score you can get bronze, silver and gold medals, used for unlocking new missions.
There are also bonus games to play, such as Cannonball and Parachuting. If you find the hidden Stars on a stage then you can forget about missions and just explore the four beautiful island stages surroundings as a Birdman.
Mario & Wario on Mount Rushmore
On the Little States stage, George Washington's face on Mount Rushmore has been replaced by Mario. If you hit Mario's nose with a Gyrocopter missile or Human Cannonball, then his face transforms into Wario.
Lark
One of the playable pilots, Lark, is based on the Nintendo Power magazine comic strip character, Nester.
Robin
The playable character Robin is named after Nintendo Gameplay Counselor Robin Krause. This replaces the characters Japanese name, "Hooter", which was deemed inappropriate.
