Your aim is to qualify through the ranks of the Pilotwings flight academy by getting a high-score on each of the flying games. Each difficulty of the academy challenges you to hit higher scores than earlier stages whilst piloting a biplane, parachuting, hang gliding, and flying with a rocket pack.
You score points several ways: most levels have rings or balls that you must hit or pass through as you move through the air, each giving you a certain number of points; most levels require you to make a safe landing. In some levels you gain points depending on the time it takes you.
There are many bonus stages that can be unlocked, including birdman, penguin, and helicopter combat modes, each testing your skills in different ways.
