Information

Andross was once a brilliant scientist, but his methods were often questioned. His experiments weren't often unethical and dangerous. It was one of these experiments that led to him being exiled on the planet Venom. Andross continued his experiments in secret, driving himself to madness.

Many years passed before it was discovered he had built an army on Venom and crowned himself the emperor. It was too late for the Cornerian armies to stop him, as his war machine rolled out across the Lylat System, taking control of the planets one by one.

Unable to break through Andross's armadas, Corneria calls upon a small team of mercenary pilots to slip through the defenses and destroy Andross. Enter Fox McCloud, Falco Lombardi, Slippy Toad and Peppy Hare - the Star Fox team.

There are three routes you can take through the game, each with different planets and space stages, and each representing a different difficulty level. There is also a training mode so you can get used to controlling your Arwing.

Before each stage you are given a mission briefing from General Pepper of the Cornerian Army. Your goal is to survive the enemies and obstacles and destroy the boss at the end of the stage. Your Arwing can be moved all around the screen. Brake or boost if you need to avoid obstacles. Holding the shoulder buttons makes you fly your Arwing on its side to squeeze through narrow areas. You are also armed with a laser gun and a Smart Bomb, both can be used for destroying enemies or hitting targets. The Arwing has a limited health bar, and if you are careless you can knock your wings off, removing any weapon power-ups you can collected.

When you destroy enemies, they may sometimes leave power-ups behind. Rings provide additional health, and the large silver ring also acts as a mid-level save point should you lose a life. You can power up your weapon to a double laser or a more powerful double laser. Other power-ups include a Shield and Wing Repair.

When you play through the stages, you are not alone. The rest of your team are also along for the ride, and they will engage enemies, get into trouble and even point out secrets. When they are being chased, you have to take out the enemy on their tails, or their ship will be damaged and they will have to retreat. You get additional points at the end of each level depending on the health of your team mates.

The name of the Arwing is a reference to Argonaut, the British game company that developed the Super FX Chip and the Star Fox game engine.
