A racing game featuring the cast of the Super Mario games. Using the same Mode 7 technology that created the similar F-Zero game, Super Mario Kart replaces the futuristic landscapes with cartoon lands from the Super Mario games. There is also a variety of weaponry that can be collected and used on each level, including speed boosts, projectile weapons, jumping feathers, etc.
There are four cups (one secret) each with five tracks. There are 8 characters to choose from, each falling into different racing classes: Mario and Luigi are standard; Princess Toadstool and Yoshi have low top speeds and high acceleration; Donkey Kong Jr. and Bowser have the highest speeds, but the worst acceleration; Toad and Koopa Troopa have low speed and medium acceleration, but are best at cornering. Each is best on specific types of stage.
What really set the game aside from F-Zero was its 2-Player modes. Two racers could take part in a straight race, or they could face off against each other in Battle Mode. The aim in Battle Mode is to burst the three balloons on the back of the opponent's car by pelting them with weapons.
