Bowser and his Koopa Kids have attacked Jewelry Land and stolen the 12 Gems. Prince Pine and King Fret send a message to the Mushroom Kingdom looking for help. Princess Peach contacts Mario and Yoshi and asks them to stop Bowser and his kids and retrieve the gems.
An on-rails shooting game played from a first-person perspective. Using the Super Scope, you have to shoot the enemies in your path. But your shots have a Power Meter - holding the trigger down allows you to fire continuously, although it drains your Power Meter quickly, and you have to let it recharge after a short time.
You move along a set path while riding Yoshi. You can see Yoshi's head in your view, and he is targeted by enemies and their projectile attacks. If he is hit then your Life Meter goes down. If the Life Meter is emptied then you lose a life. Your aim is to make your way through the stages and defeat the Boss at the end in order to progress to the next stage.
Each stage has its own traps and split paths. By shooting gates you can choose your path through the stage. Yoshi can jump, and special markers on some stages allow Yoshi to do a super jump over dangerous ground. As well as enemies, each stage is also set to a time limit. Being hit by enemies slows down your progress, and failure to complete a stage within the time limit means you lose a life.
