Following the success of Shin Onigashima, Nintendo created a second game in the Famicom Fairytales series. This time, the inspiration came from the Chinese story of Saiyuuki (better known as Journey to the West).
Story
A young girl named Chao investigates a meteor that lands near her home. From it hatches a monkey who she names Goku.
Soon after, Goku is imprisoned by the god Oshakasama, for he was once the Monkey King, banished from Earth alongside Gyumao the Bull Demon for nearly bringing an end to the Earth. As Goku's memory returns, he agrees to accompany an unkempt priest on a journey to the west in order to atone for his crimes.
On his adventure he meets new friends and faces dangerous enemies on his quest to prevent Gyumao from trying to take over the world once again.
Gameplay
The game screen is set out with a menu across the bottom of the screen, a dialogue box on the left and a graphic window showing the unfolding adventure on the right.
The game is divided into 11 chapters, with 5 on the first disk and 6 on the second, which were sold separately. Characters join and leave your party as you progress through the game: Goku is the only character playable in every chapter. You will be joined by Senzo the lecherous priest, Hakkai the pig demon, Gojo the loyal kappa and the young girl Chao at various points in the game.
In order to progress, you use your menu to interact with the surroundings, move to new locations, talk to characters, etc. You can use the Change Character command to switch between any characters currently in Goku's party. Each character has a different personality, leading to different dialogue depending on which character is currently selected. Many characters also have their own special abilities - Goku can strike characters with his Bo Staff, Hakkai and Gojo have magical abilities, etc.

Walkthrough: Disk 1, Disk 2
Mr. Ittai, the narrator from Shin Onigashima appears at the beginning of the game to introduce Chao, and acts as the narrator throughout the story. Unlike in Shin Onigashima, he does not appear as a character in the main story.
Shin Onigashima Characters
When Goku is searching for Chao in chapter 8, you can eventually switch to her, where she is locked in a prison with Kintaro from Shin Onigashima. At first Kintaro appears alone, but if you speak to him then Donbe also appears. Try the bars and the Tengu appears as well.
During this sequence, a music track entitled "Donbe" in the official soundtrack plays, which is the "Inside the Fortress" theme from Shin Onigashima (where Hikari first met the Tengu).
The characters appear throughout the rest of chapter 8 and Kintaro also appears at the beginning of chapter 9.
