When Nintendo launched its Broadcast Satellaview-X service in Japan, allowing Super Famicom owners to play games through a satellite connection, they created several new titles for old Disk System franchises. Among them was this retelling of the story from New Onigashima.
Rather than playing as Donbe and Hikari, you take control of Ringo, Matsunosuke and Ohana as they meet the other characters and join Donbe and Hikari on their adventure to defeat the Avatar of Darkness.
Cartridge Versions
When Nintendo launched the Nintendo Power service for downloading games on to blank carts, Heisei Era: New Onigashima was the first game made available. The release was so popular that a full commercial release followed.
The cart versions didn't feature the voice acting of the originals. Perhaps in a homage to the first game in the series, the game was released on two carts on the same day. You could also save your progress.
The cart release also featured an altered remake of the original Disk System game.
