Rare's combo-happy fighting series Killer Instinct used the same CGI-sprite trick as the groundbreaking Donkey Kong Country.
When Rare stopped being a Nintendo second party, they retained the rights to Killer Instinct. If they release a sequel to the series, it is not likely to be under Nintendo.
