Kirby Super Star

JP Kirby of the Stars Super Deluxe

EU Kirby's Fun Pak

Kirby Super Star is a collection of short Kirby adventures. For most of them your aim is to travel through each level, taking out enemies and boss characters, in order to progress to the next stage. Some of them work differently - Gourmet Race is a three-level racing game, and The Great Cave Offensive is one giant stage.

In all of the games, Kirby can inhale enemies and steal their powers. He can also transform his power into a computer-controller (or Player-2-controlled) helper who follows him and attacks enemies. These abilities can help you uncover secret areas and defeat enemies.

The Games

  • Spring Breeze

King Dedede has stolen all of the food in Dream Land. Kirby must fight his way to Mt. Dedede and get it back.

  • Dyna Blade

A giant bird named Dyna Blade has been destroying Dream Land's crops and terrifying its inhabitants. Kirby sets off to put a stop to the bird's rampage.

  • Gourmet Race

Kirby has discovered a land filled with delicious food. As soon as he arrives, however, he finds out that King Dedede has beaten him there. Now the two must race across the land, scoffing food, to see who will win the right to eat.

  • The Great Cave Offensive

While on a stroll, Kirby falls into a pit fall, landing in an underground world filled with treasure. Can he escape the labyrinth and collect all of the ancient treasures below?

  • Revenge of Meta-Knight

The dastardly Meta-Knight and his followers have constructed the terrible Halberd - a flying war machine that will help them to take control of Dream Land. Kirby sets off on a mission to bring the Halberd down, and stop Meta-Knight's plans.

  • Milky Way Wishes

The sun and the moon are fighting. A Dream Lander called Marx tells Kirby to travel across the solar system and speak to Nova, a wish-granting machine that can put a halt to the fighting for good.

As well as the five main games, there are also two minigames to play. In Megaton Punch, you have to line up two power bars in order to give Kirby the strength to break blocks (and Pop Star). In Samurai Kirby, you have to test your reflexes against a range of enemies.

Cameos

Mario Crowd

During the Megaton Punch minigame and the battle with King Dedede at the end of the Spring Breeze game, you can see some visitors from the Mario series on the sidelines: Mario, Luigi, Toad and Birdo.

In Kirby Super Star Ultra the crowds feature Mario, Peach and Toad on the left and Wario and Luigi on the right during the Dedede battle. The background for Megaton Punch is the same as in the original game.

The Great Cave Offensive Treasures

Many of the treasures you collect in The Great Cave Offensive are from other games. Where the treasure has been renamed in Kirby Super Star Ultra, both names are given in order of appearance.

The remake contains all of the cameo treasures from the original game, plus several new ones, mostly from other Kirby games.

Stone Kirby Statues

When Kirby uses his Stone ability, he transforms into a variety of heavy objects. There are two rare golden statues that he will occasionally transform into: Mario and Samus Aran (hero of the Metroid series).

In Kirby Super Star Ultra, both of these cameos return, and are joined by:

Sword Kirby

When Kirby gains the Sword ability he wears a pointed green cap and carries a sword with a blue handle.

This is a reference to Link and the Master Sword from The Legend of Zelda series. Several of Kirby's attacks with this ability also seem to be modelled after Link's moves from various games.

Yo-yo Kirby

Several readers have suggested that Kirby's Yo-yo ability is modelled after Ness from Earthbound. Both games were developed by HAL Laboratory, Yo-yo Kirby wears a baseball cap (although it is blue rather than red), and the icon for Yo-yo Kirby has a background similar to the EarthBound File Select screen.

Ponkotsu Tank

In Revenge of The Meta Knight, one of the enemies that appears in the belly of the ship is Moto Shotzo.

This enemy originally appeared as the player character in HAL Laboratory's Japan only Game Boy title Charge! Ponkotsu Tank.

Computer Virus

In The Great Cave Offensive and Milky Way Wishes games is a boss that appears in Mac OS 7 style windows and plays out like an RPG. The music changes to an 8-bit version of the boss battle music.

This boss also appears in Kirby Super Star Ultra, but the windows have been upgraded to Mac OSX 10.2.
