Kirby's Dream Land 2

JP Kirby of the Stars 2

The many islands of Dream Land are connected to each other by rainbows, and have been named the Rainbow Islands. But an evil being known as Dark Matter has possessed King Dedede and stolen all of the rainbows. Kirby sets off to restore the rainbows to each island, and this time he has some friends along for the ride.

Kirby can inhale air, blocks and enemies and spit them out as weapons. He can float through the air by puffing himself up. And like in Kirby's Adventure, by swallowing certain enemies, Kirby can steal their abilities. Using these moves, Kirby must make it through each stage to the goal door. Only by clearing all the stages can Kirby face the boss character who holds the rainbow needed to reach the next island.

New to this game are Kirby's animal friends, who must be rescued from mini-boss characters. Rick the hamster carries Kirby on his back, runs faster and doesn't lose traction on slippery surfaces. Coo the owl carries Kirby in his talons, and can fly in even the strongest winds. Kine the fish carries Kirby in his mouth, and is an excellent swimmer. On top of this, when Kirby has a special ability, the effect changes when riding one of Kirby's friends, which can often be used to reach secret areas.

Cameos

Blocky

The Rock ability miniboss Blocky originally appeared in HAL Laboratory's Adventures of Lolo series (Eggerland in Japan).

In that game he was just a standard enemy.

Chao from Yuuyuuki (Japanese version)

When you rescue the same Animal Friend as the one you are riding, you will meet Gooey. On rare occasions you will meet a female Gooey, possibly the inspiration for Chuchu in Kirby's Dream Land 3. She rewards you with an extra life and you need to meet her at least once to get the maximum completion percentage.

This female Gooey does not appear in the Japanese version. Instead you rescue Chao, the female protagonist from Famicom Disk System adventure game Yuuyuuki.

The Sound Test scene is also a scene from Yuuyuuki. This scene also appears in the US/European version, but Gooey and female Gooey appear in place of Chao on the piano.
