The flower Power-Up from Super Mario Bros. that allowed Mario and Luigi to shoot fireballs. Here, pick it up to shoot a stream of fire from it.

Starman

The bouncing star from Super Mario Bros. that made Mario and Luigi invincible. When you grab a Starman here, it protects you from all attacks temporarily. When a character uses a Starman, the music changes to the Starman invincibility theme.

Green Shell

Green Shell

When you stomp on a Koopa Troopa in the Mario series, you can then kick or throw its shell to knock down enemies. Hitting or throwing a green shell in Smash Bros. has the same effect, travelling in a straight line and damaging anyone in its path.

Red Shell

Red Shell

The Red Shell comes from the Red Koopa Troopa, known for walking back and forth on a single platform. The Red Shell in Smash Bros. also stays on one platform, but it also homes in on characters who stand on the same platform, an effect borrowed from the homing Red Shells in Super Mario Kart.

Bob-omb

The Bob-omb is a little mechanical bomb enemy from Super Mario Bros. 2. When it appears in Smash Bros. it sits on the ground for a few seconds, during which time it can be picked it. Once it lights its fuse and starts walking around it will explode as soon as anyone touches it. After a few more seconds it will explode on its own.

Hammer

In the arcade Donkey Kong, when Mario grabbed a Hammer he would swing it around, smashing any barrels and enemies in his path, but he was unable to climb ladders. In Smash Bros., your character swings the Hammer around in the same way dealing massive damage to anyone it hits, but you are unable to use more than one jump or any other attack for the duration. While the Hammer is in use, the original Donkey Kong Hammer theme plays.

In The Legend of Zelda series, Heart Containers are rare items that give you an extra Heart on your life meter. In Smash Bros. they return your damage to 0%.

Maxim Tomato

Kirby's favourite food refills your health in the Kirby series. In Smash Bros. the Maxim Tomato returns your damage to 0%.

Star Rod

In Kirby's Adventure, you use the Star Rod to shoot stars during the final boss battle. In Smash Bros. you can swing it as a weapon, but if you use a Smash attack to swing them it will also shoot a damaging star.

Motion-Sensor Bomb

Motion-Sensor Bomb

In GoldenEye 007, the Motion-Sensor Bomb is a small mine that sticks to any surface it's thrown at, then explodes when someone comes close to it. In Smash Bros. it has the same effect.

Poké Ball

Poké Ball

In the Pokémon series, Poké Balls are used to capture and store Pokémon. At the start of a battle, you throw the Poké Ball and the Pokémon leaps out ready to attack. In Smash Bros., throwing a Poké Ball causes a random Pokémon (from a selection of 13) to appear and unleash an attack.

Charizard Stands in one spot and breathes a Flamethrower attack to the left and right.
Blastoise Fires its Hydro Pump, pushing itself backwards with each blast.
Beedrill Flies off screen, then appears again with a swarm that flies across the stage.
Clefairy Uses Metronome, unleashing a random attack used by one of the other 12 Pokémon.
Meowth Jumps into the air and uses Pay Day, firing coins all around it.
Onix Leaps off the top of the screen and drops rocks onto the stage.
Hitmonlee Aims at a random player and leaps through the air with a Hi Jump Kick.
Koffing Floats in the air and surrounds itself with a damaging cloud of Poison Gas.
Chansey Drops eggs from her pouch that may contain items.
Goldeen Appears and uselessly splashes around on the ground.
Starmie Targets a random player and unleashes a Swift attack, hurling damaging stars.
Snorlax Leaps off the top of the screen then Body Slams down, several times its original size.
Mew Appears rarely and flies away in a bubble. It doesn't attack, but it does award a bonus score if you find it.
