Nintendo GameCube

At their E3 press conference in 1999, Nintendo unveiled the first details of "Project Dolphin", their fourth home videogame system. The final version, the GameCube, was unveiled over a year later at Nintendo's Spaceworld show in August 2000.

The GameCube is the first Nintendo console to use disc-based media. Named after the system's compact cube shape, it boasts impressive graphics and sound capabilities, and benefitted from early support from many of the N64's biggest developers. It also proved to be the final system release under the watchful eye of Hiroshi Yamauchi, who stepped down as Nintendo's president shortly after the console came out, leaving the company in the hands of Satoru Iwata.

Despite a strong beginning, the system saw a rapid drop-off in support from publishers and in retail in the west. Despite this, Nintendo went on to strengthen ties with other publishers, such as Capcom, Square-Enix and Electronic Arts.
