Super Nintendo Entertainment System

When the Famicom juggernaut was faced with stiff 16-bit competition from Sega and NEC, Nintendo responded by releasing the Super Famicom in 1990. The system was capable of graphics and sound that blew away what the competition was capable of.

The Super Famicom was redesigned and released as the Super Nintendo Entertainment System in the United States in 1991. The European release took the U.S. name, but kept the less-angular Japanese design.

Over its lifetime, the SNES was home to many of the most fondly remembered 16-bit era games, and continued to innovate with new chipsets (such as the Super FX chip, allowing for textured 3D polygon graphics), and Rare's CGI graphic technique that led to the high quality graphics of the Donkey Kong Country and Killer Instinct games.
